Tyukusu mask
Tyukusu mask
This tyukusu (mask) belongs to a branch of the ancient association of the bakama which came into being at the end of the 18th century: the brotherhood of the bandunga. In the twentieth century, these masks primarily partipated in purification rituals and conjurations of natural catastrophes. They also appeared during funerals of notables, when a chief was appointed, but also to mark the arrival of an important visitor.
